Dry Ice Information

How to Handle Dry Ice:

When picking up dry ice, always wear insulated gloves to protect your skin from the cold temperature. Even an oven mitt will work in handling dry ice. The temperature of dry ice is -109.3F (or -78.5C). If your skin touches it for a moment, you will be ok, but prolonged contact could be harmful to the skin, causing frostbite.

Storage for Dry Ice:

Keeping your dry ice in an insulated container is best for keeping it cold, and making it last longer. The sublimation of dry ice will cause the container to expand and possibly crack open, so remember to keep the area ventilated where the dry ice is stored. Do not store dry ice in unventilated cellars, or a walk in freezer. Carbon Dioxide is heavier than air, and will sink to low spaces. This may cause the carbon dioxide to replace the oxygen in the air, making it harmful to breathe. Ventilation is extremely important with dry ice!

Proper Ventilation of Dry Ice:

The normal air we breathe is 78 % Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and .035% Carbon Dioxide. If the air concentration of Carbon Dioxide goes above 0.5% it can be dangerous to breathe. If you have had the dry ice in a closed truck or room for ten minutes or more, you must let the area ventilate before going in.

Signs of Carbon Dioxide Poisoning:

If Carbon Dioxide is in the area, and you have had extended contact with it, please know the signs of Carbon Dioxide poisoning:

Dry Ice Burns:

Burns from dry ice are very similar in reaction to regular heat burns, to the skin. If your skin becomes "red or pink" this is a minor burn (1nst degree surface burn). If you see blisters on the skin, this could be 2nd degree burns, and you may need to see a doctor for treatment.

DRY ICE HANDLING:

  1. DO NOT LEAVE DRY ICE AROUND UNATTENDED CHILDREN!
  2. DO NOT LEAVE DRY ICE IN AN UNVENTILATED AREA
  3. DO NOT SET DRY ICE ON COUNTERTOPS, GLASS OR PLASTIC SURFACES WITHOUT A BARRIER UNDERNEATH IT.
  4. DO NOT HANDLE DRY ICE WITHOUT GLOVES
  5. DO NOT LET DRY ICE MAKE DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE SKIN
  6. DO NOT SEAL IT INTO AN AIRTIGHT CONTAINER
